Abstract:

The number of annuli in the cementum of the third lower molar of grizzly bears (Ursus spp.) seems to be one less than the age in years of the bear. Age (number of annuli plus one) is positively correlated with the zygomatic breadth of the cleaned skull (r = 0.923). The formula for the regression of age on zygomatic breadth is y = log 125 + 0.164 log x. To age live bears, it is necessary to determine empirically a factor for conversion from zygomatic width of the cleaned skull to that of a skull in the flesh.
