Abstract:

The Yellowstone Ursus arctos horribilis population is isolated and vulnerable to epidemic perturbation. The carrying capacity of the habitat is likely to shift downward under conditions of climate change. Viability analyses based on the assumption that future habitats will closely resemble those existing at present have limited applicability; more information is needed on the autecology of important bear foods and on the implications of landscape-scale changes for bear population dynamics.
