Abstract:

Organochlorine pesticide residues and PCBs were measured in the scats (faeces) of otters from five regions in southwest Scotland and northern England, U.K. Dieldrin, DDE and PCBs were significantly higher in samples from the two English regions than those in Scotland. There was a trend of increase from west to east. The distribution of otters was inversely correlated to mean concentrations of dieldrin, DDE and PCBs in scats, suggesting that organochlorines may still be exerting a negative impact on the species.
