Abstract:

A rounded?eared fox was photographed by the author in a semi?desert area of the Gobi, Mongolia. Close examination of the scarce literature permitted identification only with a captive fox from Bukharia, Uzbekistan, in a photograph of Ognev's (1926). Without mentioning the peculiar shape of the ears, Ognev classed this animal among the many races of the red fox, Vulpes vulpes, inhabiting Central Asia. However, since pointed ears are a general character of V. vulpes, the rounded?eared fox may be a new species, till now mistaken for the sympatric red fox.A rounded?eared fox was photographed by the author in a semi?desert area of the Gobi, Mongolia.
