Abstract: | Summary The Author describes a peculiar epithelial structure (buccal pad), which he has found in Pipistrellus kuhli kuhli (Natterer). The buccal pad occurs in the vestibule of the mouth, close to the angle, and consists of a thickening of stratified squamous epithelium of the mucous membrane lining the upper labio-gengival fornix. The cells of the buccal pad are charged with different quantities of fatty substance, which probably consists mainly of unsaturated glycerids. Observations made chiefly during the months of september and october shown that the buccal pad attains its maximum development in the rutting males when the cauda epididymi is filled with sperms. This structure is much less developped in the females and in those males in which no sperms have been found in the epididymis (even if a great amount of sperms occurs in the didymis). The buccal pad may represent a male seasonal secondary sexual character controlled by the male sex hormone. The buccal pad occurs also in Nyctalus noctula (Schr.), in Pipistrellus p. pipistrellus (Schr.), in P. s. savii (Bonpt.) and, almost certainly, in Nyctalus leisleri (Kuhl), in N. siculus (Minà Palumbo) and in Pipistrellus nathusii (K. et Bl.); it appears to be lacking in Rhinolophus, Myotis, Eptesicus and Plecotus. |
