Abstract: | In South African West Coast, small mammals (mainly Otomys unisulcatus and Rhabdomys pumilio) constituted the bulk of the diet (90.4%), insects were a secondary food resource (4.9%). This mongoose appears to conform to the general hypothesis of a relationship between a carnivorous diet and solitary behaviour. The productivity of the 2 major prey species appears to be much higher than the food requirements of this mongoose population. This may explain the apparent lack of territoriality reported for this and other species. |
