Abstract:

The bat fauna of eleven isolated islands was censused with acoustic technique. Numbers of species present and absent (with suitable habitats) were analysed against island area, distance to area with source fauna, latitude, and combinations of these factors. The three factors jointly explain about 80% of the variation in species number, the area being most important. The number of absent species was correlated with distance. The theoretical maximum number of species (sum of present and absent) was best correlated with a term containing area and latitude but not the distance. Pipistrellus pipistrellus was evidently most affected by gaps of water, being absent on eight islands with suitable habitats. The absence of Vespertilio murinus, Myotis daubentoni and Nyctalus noctula on some of the islands is probably explained by at least some reluctance to cross extensive waters. Total absence of bat populations on Laesø is probably a result of the former lack of forests.
