Abstract:

Field survey was carried out to gather data on the present distribution of land mammals of the Sinai Peninsula. The survey covered major biotopes and numerous localities throughout the peninsula. A variety of capture methods, in addition to direct field observation of the animals, their tracks and other indirect evidence of presence, and interviews with local Bedouins were used to gather data on the mammalian fauna. New data on the distribution of a total of 21 species of mammals in the Sinai Peninsula are presented. This includes two species (Hystrix indica, and Vormela peregusna) and one subspecies (Vulpes vulpes arabica) that are recorded for the first time from Sinai. Notes on the habitats and taxonomic relationship of some species are also included.
